A pioneering advanced apprenticeships scheme, developed by the University of Sheffield, has been shortlisted for a prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Award.

The scheme is the brainchild of the new Training Centre, opened earlier this year by the Universitys Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing (AMRC), and has been shortlisted for the THE Widening Participation Initiative of the Year Award.

An initiative to help jobless youngsters improve their chance of finding work has come up trumps for 22-year-old Sam Jackson.

Sam was one of 15 out of work 20 to 25 year olds taking part in a JobCentre Plus employability programme which included a two week spell at the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre Training Centre.

AMRC apprentices tear down gearbox to build up engineering knowledge

Nine of the AMRC Training Centre apprentices have recently completed the tear-down of an automotive gear box in order to identify the materials used and the dimensions and weight of the components. Supervised by two Tata Steel product metallurgists, who are specialists in the forging and automotive industries, the apprentices analysed each gear to determine what processes it had been through, for example heat treatment.

As part of their Technical Support Apprenticeship, a group of AMRC Training Centre apprentices have produced a fully functioning barbecue. The team managed the full production process themselves, coming up with the initial idea, developing the design and plans, through to producing the finished product. The barbecue was made up of multiple parts, all machined separately by the apprentices, that then had to be intricately welded together.

Its always an exciting time at the AMRC Training Centre when a new cohort of apprentices starts.

This month 15 apprentices joined the ranks on either machining or maintenance pathways. They will be at the Centre for between 6 to 12 months and will start with the basics, including health & safety, personal learning & thinking, engineering principles and so on.

The advisors were unanimously impressed as they undertook a tour of the building - which took in the shop floor facilities (from the advanced CNC cells to standard tooling equipment), welding bays, electronics workshop, virtual reality suite (which includes virtual welding machines), as well as the new robotics and metallurgy workshops – where apprentices are testing the brakes to be used on the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car (SSC) using spectrography and hardness testing equipment.

It became clear to the AMRC Training Centre during its apprentice recruitment that schools werent teaching our young people the right kind of maths to be an engineer. Its subjects like calculus and quadratic formulas that help engineers solve problems but they are out of favour on the national curriculum.

100% of business & administration apprentices pass their technical certificates

The AMRC Training Centre delivers business and administration apprenticeships, in addition to its range of engineering pathways.

The first cohort of seven apprentices have been studying hard since September and took their exams in February. The results are in and every one of them passed their technical certificate at either level 2 or 3(EDI accreditation).
