West Special Fasteners are looking for a machinist apprentice to complete a level 3 machining technician apprenticeship. The candidate will be required to operate a variety of machines to perform assigned tasks. They will produce or repair precision parts using both manual and automated equipment and accurate measurements. A great machinist needs to possess manual dexterity and an eye for detail. They must also have knowledge of mathematics and mechanics as well as respect for safety precautions. The goal is to ensure effective production operations and optimise procedures.

Role & responsibilities:

  • Review samples, drawings, or instructions to understand specifications of output
  • Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job
  • Select appropriate machines (e.g., lathes) and position or load material for a job
  • Determine and program size of batches, speed of machine, etc.
  • Monitor machine while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature and identify issues
  • Check output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects
  • Keep records of approved and defective units or final products
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and repair minor damages
  • You will produce precision parts using manual and automated machines
  • Use of ERP system to record completed processes

Skills required:

  • Experience in using and/or programming manual, semi-automated or automated tools and machines (lathes, grinders etc.)
  • Ability to use precision tools (e.g., callipers) to take accurate measurements
  • Good at mathematics with analytical abilities
  • Physical stamina and strength as some lifting required

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
