Job description:

Swallownest Engineering are looking for a machining technician to complete a Level 3 machining technician apprenticeship to join their team. The position would suit a candidate with a mechanical bias who would like to be involved in a variety of different disciplines and projects. Through this apprenticeship, it can enable the candidate to flourish by learning and developing the skills to become a technician-level mechanical engineer.

Role & responsibilities:

The candidate will start off by learning Centre Lathe Turning and Manual Milling. After that Swallownest Engineering can offer an opportunity for the candidate to learn other aspects of Engineering, including CNC Milling, Bench Fitting, Gear Cutting, Welding and Fabrication and CAD.

Carry out all aspects of machining including:

  • Centre Lathe Turning
  • Manual Milling
  • CNC Milling
  • Bench Fitting
  • Gear Cutting
  • Welding and Fabrication
  • CAD 

Skills required:

  • Attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Adaptable with the ability to work in a multi-skilled engineering environment

We are a heavy engineering jobbing shop, mainly involved in one-off projects for the steel and construction industries in machining and fabrication, employing multi-skilled, very experienced engineers who are willing to share their knowledge and skills with a junior engineer who would be willing, and interested, to learn and enjoy many fruitful years in the Engineering Industry. 

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
