Apprentices cook up a barbecue

As part of their Technical Support Apprenticeship, a group of AMRC Training Centre apprentices have produced a fully functioning barbecue. The team managed the full production process themselves, coming up with the initial idea, developing the design and plans, through to producing the finished product. The barbecue was made up of multiple parts, all machined separately by the apprentices, that then had to be intricately welded together.

Apprentices have now progressed on to the state-of-the-art CNC machinery in the AMRC Training Centre. Around 50 apprentices on the Mechanical & Manufacturing pathway are now hands on with the CNC machines.

AMRC apprentices tear down gearbox to build up engineering knowledge

Nine of the AMRC Training Centre apprentices have recently completed the tear-down of an automotive gear box in order to identify the materials used and the dimensions and weight of the components. Supervised by two Tata Steel product metallurgists, who are specialists in the forging and automotive industries, the apprentices analysed each gear to determine what processes it had been through, for example heat treatment.

Newburgh Engineering ran a charity golf day last week at Hickleton Gold Club to raise funds for Sheffield Childrens Hospital. The AMRC Training Centre entered two teams – one with office manager Julia Barratt and trainer Mick Fairman and the other with trainer Jonathan Radford and apprentice Aiden Willis.

AMRC Training Centre in partnership with MTA host "Advances in Machining" event

The AMRC Training Centre, in partnership with the Manufacturing Technology Association (MTA) hosted the ‘Advances in Machining conference on the 24th of June.  With over 200 attendees the event proved an extremely successful forerunner to the Global Manufacturing Festival.

Top aerospace executive praises university apprenticeships initiative

A top executive from global aero engine giant Rolls-Royce has given a ringing endorsement to a University of Sheffield initiative that gives young people cutting edge engineering skills. Rolls-Royce director of global manufacturing, Dr Hamid Mughal, was speaking at the National Summit for Apprentices and Higher Vocational Education, held at the Universitys Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing (AMRC), in the Sheffield City Region.
