Make, Create, Innovate - AMRC Training Centre, Rotherham
Wednesday 15 March 2017
Following the success of previous Make, Create, Innovate events, where over 300 students, parents and teachers attended, the event is back for March 2017!
If you are thinking about starting a career in engineering or any other STEM-related industry, this event will help you with your decisions.
Lots of experts from education and industry will be on hand to show you what is on offer and you can actually have a go at playing with robots, 3D printing, building your own gadget plus loads more.
Choosing to find out more about the industry now could change your future – there’s never been a better time to get involved, with big companies moving into South Yorkshire looking for a skilled workforce.
Who’s it for?
- Pupils - There's lots for you to see and do, get hands on and speak to people already working in STEM industries.
- Parents - We've brought together the AMRC Training Centre, the University Technical College (UTC) and the universities to answer your questions about options for your child in our industry sector.

Make, Create Innovate in 2015
The events in 2015 were a great success, approximately 250 attendees tried their hand at virtual welding, constructing a bridge out of chocolate, learnt how to programme and control robots and toured to AMRC facilities. The Training Centre accepted 39 expressions of interest for new apprentices interested in joining the 2016 cohort of new apprentices.
Participants of 2015's summer Manufacturing Camp from Handsworth Grange Community Sports College (HGCSC) returned to the AMRC to exhibit at Make, Create, Innovate. HGCSC is an active participant in STEM activities to help with their students with their engineering curriculum and give them an insight and hands-on experience of manufacturing apprenticeships.
Their Year 11 students who are considering applying to the Training Centre have become STEM ambassadors, giving them the enthusiastic attitude to work that employers look for in potential recruits.
Feedback from past attendees
Brendan Pattison, 16, from Barnsley joined the AMRC Training Centre in 2015 as an apprentice employed by Castings Technology International Ltd. Brendan was inspired to apply for a place at the Training Centre after attending our Make, Create, Innovate event in 2014:
"I have always been interested in engineering through my time working as a kart mechanic and racing with South Yorkshire Kart Club, so I had considered studying engineering at college and university."
"I didn’t know anything about the Training Centre until last year’s event. There were loads of people to talk to and I ended up meeting an apprentice who was employed by Casting Technology International, he told me all about the work they do and what his apprenticeship involved."
"The practical nature of it really appealed to me and it sounded a great opportunity. It’s a great hands-on alternative to the traditional university route and I would recommend anyone interested in engineering to consider an apprenticeship."
